About Su
Su has been making music since the age of 16, first picking up the guitar and diving into indie music. Before long, her curiosity led her toward folk, where she fell in love with the mandolin’s melodies and soon added banjo and fiddle to her toolkit, developing into an Old Time musician. After graduating from Dartington College of Arts in 2006 with a degree in Music (as a performer), she has been a regular presence on the South West music scene. You might catch her at local sessions or performing in duos with a rotating cast of collaborators. Her former band, The Temporary Trio, helped take her playing to another level, with regular gigs across the region.
Known by many as a walking “library” of tunes (though she now admits she sometimes forgets how they start!), Su has built deep roots in the Old Time community. She also served as the webmaster for the Friends of American Old Time Music and Dance website, strengthening connections with fellow musicians far and wide.
Su’s latest project is an online jam which started in 2020 during the Covid pandemic to keep people connected and playing. During this time, many new players also took up lessons, and although she had taught online before, the pandemic gave her the opportunity to refine and expand her digital teaching.
Alongside performing, Su has been teaching since 2007, sharing her knowledge and love of traditional music with others.
